Roots of Conservation

Texans have demonstrated resilience in facing challenging environmental conditions, including fearsome flora, fanged fauna, wildfires, floods, and droughts. Our continued growth is rooted in the recognition that “a strong Texas is where conservation takes root.” In honor of spring and the enduring resolve of our communities, the Hickory UWCD, together with several partner agencies, will host “Roots of Conservation” on March 19, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library in Mason, Texas (410 Post Hill) in the Stribling Room.
J.D. Kidwell of Habitat for Humanity will lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the library’s newly renovated Camp Discovery at 11:30. The Habitat team was responsible for the site renovations. Mr. Kidwell will also present on Habitat's conservation initiatives. The event features a distinguished group of speakers, including Austin Kelly from Texas A&M, who will address Juniper encroachment; representatives from the Central Basin Prescribed Burn Association; Brian Wright, recipient of the Mason SWCD 2025 Wildlife Conservationist award; Kory Perlichek, Wildlife Biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife; John Davis, recipient of the 2022 Texas Rain Catcher Award; and Rachel Farrington from La Cuna Center in Castell.
Along with exhibits from speakers, visitors can check out tables hosted by Mason/Llano SWCD, Mason County NRCS, Central Texas Master Gardeners, and Hickory UWCD. Attendees have the chance to win a 50-gallon rainwater harvesting barrel or a 7½-foot rain chain in the raffle. Exciting door prizes will be available throughout the event. There’s also plenty of swag up for grabs, such as seed packets from Native American Seed and Turner Seed, stickers, shower timers, educational resources, and much more!
This event is open to everyone. Please, join us and learn more about the conservation efforts of these various individuals and organizations. Together we can strengthen our roots and flourish as spring arrives.
